STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF BIOLOGY CLASS-ROOM ENVIRONMENT ON THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine students’ perception of biology class-room environment on their academic achievement in senior secondary schools with special reference to some selected secondary schools in Shomolu local government area Lagos State. Specifically, the study determine the students’ perception of teachers’ support in the classroom. The study also determine the students’ perception based on the level of availability of instructional materials. The study further determine the students’ perception based on their study habit. More so, the study determine the students’ level of involvement in the classroom. Lastly, the study determine the students’ perception based on the classroom disciplinary climate of the class room. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 77 responses were validated from the survey.  From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that  teachers’ support in a biology classroom is high. Also, the level of availability of instructional materials is high. Furthermore, students’ perception based on the study habit is high. More so,  students’ level of involvement in the classroom is also high. Lastly, students’ perception based on the classroom disciplinary climate of the class room is high. The study thereby recommend that teacher should endeavour to create conducive and stimulating atmosphere for all the classes irrespective of the location.  The study also recommend that professional status of the teacher should be greatly improved through seminars and workshops organized by the state, federal ministries of education and states secondary education management board to inform teachers on the type of classroom in which geography should be taught.
