Abstract
Oral literature means oral works of high merit which are products of the creative use of imagination by the artist of the spoken words in pre-literate communities. This study focused on oral literature as a medium of teaching moral values to selected schools. it was carried out in schools in Orlu West Local Government Area of Imo state.The population for the study consists of all primary basic schools in Oru West Local Government area of Imo State out of which 100 pupils and 20 teachers were randomly selected from 10 sampled schools from the population.Data were analysed using mean; standard deviation and the hypothesis were tested at 0.05 level of significance using t-test. the result showed that teachers and pupils as regard oral literature for teaching and learning moral values does not differ significantly owing to the beliefs surrounding the subject matter. it also showed that The viewpoint of male and female teachers as regards the subject matter does not differ significantly. in conlusion, a story-telling teaching model for inculcating values to children and youths is suggested for teachers. Finally, Igbos (Africans) themselves must cease to regard our oral literature as primitive.
