ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on television broadcasting, reality TV shows and moral development of Nigeria youths. The study relied on social survey. The data for this study were generated from two main sources; Primary sources and secondary sources. Using purposive sampling technique, one hundred and fifty (150) copies of questionnaire were administered on students from five faculties of University of Port Harcourt. The faculties were equally represented - 30 respondents each. Out of the number of questionnaire, one hundred and thirty (130) copies were returned. Ten (10) were wrongly filled in. Thus, one hundred and twenty (120) copies of the questionnaire were used as the basis for the study. The instrument of questionnaire was adopted in this study. Responses to opinion-testing questions were tabulated and ranked in simple percentages. The findings of the study have shown that even though reality television programmes come with entertainment, youths also get influenced by the programmes as they watch their heroes. Reality programmes challenge them to think of how they can achieve positive objectives in life, how they can face certain challenging situations. It is therefore here recommended that further (follow-up) research be carried out in such areas as content analysis of reality shows and effect on other segment of the population such as children and older persons.
