THE IMPACT OF CREDIT RISK ON BANK PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This study intends to examine the impact of credit risk on bank performance in Nigeria for the period 2004-2014. The pervasive incidence of non-performing loan is one of the prime causes of failure in the banking system. The internal exams to ascertain if loans are with collateralized and self-liquidating could not be held accountable. Financial report of 10 commercial banks were used to analyse for 10 years (2004-2014), particularly from the annual reports of United Bank of Africa (UBA), Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB),  Assess Bank plc, WEMA Bank, First Bank, Diamond Bank, Fidelity Bank, Skye Bank, First City Monument Bank and Zenith Bank of  2004-2014, the study will make use of econometrics procedures of Panel Least Square (OLS) techniques in estimating all the functional relationship in the system as well as obtaining numerical estimates for the coefficients of different equations.

The findings revealed that only bank size has a positive and significant impact on bank performance. The study concludes that, there is a positive relationship between credit risk and bank performance in Nigeria, The study recommends that banks should adhere to credit risk principle before giving out credit as this may affect their performance.
