ABSTRACT
The study deals with student attitude towards laboratory work and its impact on academic performance in chemistry in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Specifically, the study find out if the quality of the teacher influence students attitude towards chemistry laboratory work. The study also ascertain if the quality of the chemistry laboratory equipment influences students attitude towards chemistry laboratory work. The study further find out if the time spent on laboratory activities influences students attitude towards chemistry laboratory works. Lastly, the study find out if there are differences in attitude of students towards laboratory work in chemistry between boys and girls in secondary schools.A total of 150 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that the quality of teacher will influence students attitude towards chemistry laboratory work. The study also revealed that the quality of the chemistry laboratory equipment will influence students attitude towards chemistry laboratory work. The study further revealed that the time spent on laboratory activities will influence students attitude towards chemistry laboratory works. Lastly, the study revealed that there is a difference in attitude of students towards laboratory work in chemistry between boys and girls in secondary schools. The study thereby recommend thatStudents’ should consider Chemistry practical work as part of the course or subject to meet their needs/requirement to study Medicine, pharmacy, Chemical Engineering and the practical oriented Chemistry topics should be demonstrated in the laboratory using all the necessary equipment’s and reagents, also; more time allocated on the time-table for Chemistry practical laboratory work. The study also recommend that chemistry Laboratories in every Senior Secondary Schools should be equipped with modern equipment and other necessary teaching aids or instructional materials and qualified Chemistry teachers (B. Sc. Chemistry Education) should be employed to teach Chemistry subject, they are qualified Chemistry teacher.
