ABSTRACT
There are a number of peculiar features in West Africa which have definitely influenced trends in integration. Not only does the area have some of the densest populations in Africa, it also contains the largest number of individual nations, fifteen and embraces three different agro-ecological zones against the one or two zones of other African regions. West Africa possesses the largest variation of mineral ores and the relief is generally flat, thus making it conducive to the development of railways and roads. Only three out of the countries in the sub-region are landlocked.
Regional integration has, thus, been defined as a process of peacefully creating a larger coherent political system out of previously separate units, each of which voluntarily cedes some part of its sovereignty to a central authority and renounces the use of force for resolving conflict between members.
This study focused on how regional integration was created in West Africa, and the challenges they face as well as their way forward.
This research made use of secondary data like textbooks, journal articles, and internet resources.
