ABSTRACT
The phenomenon of violence against women which is any act of gender-based violence that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women has been very prevalent in Nigeria. It has been characterized as the most pervasive yet least recognized human rights abuse in the world. This study explored the public perception of violence against women in urban and rural areas in Egor LGA of Edo State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional sample survey was adopted for data collection. A total of one thousand, one hundred and sixty five (1,165) male and female respondents who were 18 years and above were selected from two rural and two urban local government areas using simple random sampling method. The study employed a uniform set of structured questionnaire schedule, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions in data collection. The study indicated that there is a high level of awareness (90.0%) of violence against women in the State. The study equally revealed that people with medium level of education and female respondents were more aware of violence against women than their corresponding counterparts. Different forms of violence against women were identified in the study and they include beating, rape, humiliation, verbal abuse, widowhood practices, early marriage, sexual harassment, female genital mutilation, forced prostitution and trafficking in women. Consequences of violence against women include depression, suicide, murder, STDs, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, physical injuries, high mortality, high blood pressure and sudden death. Therefore, the study recommends that government and non-governmental organizations should organize workshops and seminars in both urban and rural areas and also make wider their sensitization projects to the rural areas.
