Abstract
Reading is undeniably a very important part of the educational structure of Nigeria. Unfortunately, trends have proven that there is a decline in the reading habit and interest of students in reading, at all levels of the educational system.
(Acheaw, 2014). Various researches have proven that that the frequency of reading, reading attitudes, reading interests and the environment of students play a vital role in academic growth. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of examination grade pursuit, stakeholders, the materials students like to read, and the reasons why students have read. The study was conducted in Enugu state which is in the south east Nigeria. A comprehensive questionnaire was used for the data collection from primary and Junior High School students. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20 was used to analyze the data collected quantitatively. Graphs, charts and tables were used to present the results of findings. The study identified that the reading habits and interests of students at the basic level is different from the tertiary level and majority of the students regarded reading as an academic activity. It is recommended that the government and other stakeholders consider establishing fully stocked community libraries, to facilitate improvement in the reading habits of students in Enugu state.
