ABSTRACT
The study examined the funding of Nigerian medical libraries using Federal Medical Centre (Fmc) Library, Owerri, Imo State as case study.
The study employed the survey design and the Simple random sampling technique to select 50 staff from Federal Medical Centre (Fmc) Library, Owerri, Imo State. A well-constructed questionnaire, which was adjudged valid and reliable, was used for collection of data from the respondents. The data obtained through the administration of the questionnaires was analyzed using the frequency table.
The results showed that inadequate funding of medical libraries, limit the scope of services provided to the clientele..
The study concluded that the inability of an organization to review of its library polices affect the funding of such library; the inability of the institution (Federal Medical Centre Owerri) to secure funds as at when due, minimize its acquisition of materials; the ability of the manager of medical libraries to exploit other sources of fund limit-the available funds.
The study suggested that; Medical libraries need to be adequately supported and funded by government and none governmental agencies in the country. Better funding of Medical libraries by federal and State Governments are necessary as this will enable them cope with Internet inter connectivity, infrastructures and acquisition of current Information resources. Internet access enable libraries to locate information stored in other computers around the world in the web.( websites)Also adequate electricity supply should be made available; Medical libraries need to be thorough in retrieval devices that will enable access to information.
