Background of the study
Digital literacy has become an essential component of academic research and learning. Academic libraries in Zaria Local Government Area have increasingly implemented digital literacy training programs to enhance students’ research skills. These programs are designed to equip students with the necessary competencies to navigate digital resources, critically assess online information, and utilize advanced research tools (Muhammad, 2023). The integration of digital literacy training into the library’s services has transformed the traditional research paradigm, fostering an environment where students can effectively manage and analyze information. Such initiatives not only support academic success but also prepare students for the demands of the modern digital workplace (Aminu, 2024). Despite these efforts, challenges such as limited access to technology, varying levels of digital competence among students, and insufficient support infrastructure remain (Sani, 2024). This study examines the extent to which digital literacy training provided by academic libraries influences students’ research skills, focusing on its effectiveness and the areas that require further enhancement to meet contemporary educational demands (Bello, 2023).
Statement of the problem
While academic libraries in Zaria have initiated digital literacy training programs, there is evidence that students’ research skills vary considerably. Inconsistent training methods, inadequate technological resources, and a lack of follow-up support contribute to suboptimal outcomes. These challenges hinder the ability of students to fully harness digital tools in their research, affecting academic performance and readiness for the digital economy. This study aims to explore these challenges and identify strategies to improve the digital literacy training programs, ensuring that all students are equipped with essential research skills (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
To evaluate the impact of digital literacy training on students’ research skills.
To identify challenges faced by academic libraries in delivering digital literacy training.
To propose improvements for enhancing digital literacy among students.
Research questions
How does digital literacy training influence students’ research skills?
What challenges hinder the effective delivery of digital literacy training in academic libraries?
What strategies can be implemented to improve digital literacy training outcomes?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative role of digital literacy training in academic libraries. The findings will aid university administrators and library professionals in refining training programs to better support students’ research skills, ultimately contributing to improved academic performance and digital competence (Mustapha, 2024).
