Background of the study
Marriage rituals have long been central to cultural identity, reflecting the traditions and values of a society. In Kano State, traditional marriage ceremonies have historically embodied communal celebrations and intricate cultural practices. However, modern societal changes—such as globalization, urbanization, and evolving social norms—are reshaping these rituals. Contemporary influences have led to modifications in traditional practices, integrating modern elements with customary traditions (Abdullahi, 2023). The evolution of marriage rituals is evident in changes in ceremony styles, dress codes, and the roles of participants, reflecting a broader shift in cultural values and social expectations. While modern adaptations can enhance inclusivity and reflect contemporary lifestyles, they may also dilute the rich cultural heritage associated with traditional marriage ceremonies. This study examines the evolution of marriage rituals in modern societies, with evidence drawn from Kano State, to understand how traditional practices are adapted in response to modern influences and what these changes signify for cultural continuity and identity (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
The evolution of marriage rituals in Kano State has raised concerns regarding the preservation of traditional cultural practices amid modern influences. While contemporary adaptations may offer greater flexibility and inclusivity, they also risk eroding time-honored customs that define communal identity. The tension between tradition and modernity creates challenges for maintaining cultural heritage, as younger generations may favor modern practices over traditional ceremonies. This study seeks to explore these dynamics and assess the implications of evolving marriage rituals for cultural preservation and social cohesion (Adebola, 2023).
