Background of the study
This study evaluates how cultural discourse is expressed in Nigerian Pidgin through contemporary music. Nigerian Pidgin serves as a dynamic medium for artistic expression, particularly in music genres such as hip-hop, afrobeats, and rap, where artists use it to articulate social, cultural, and political narratives (Ibrahim, 2023). The research investigates the role of Nigerian Pidgin in conveying cultural identity, humor, and critique, analyzing lyrics, musical videos, and performance styles. Methods include lyrical content analysis, interviews with musicians, and audience surveys to determine how effectively Nigerian Pidgin captures cultural discourse. The study further explores the interplay between language, music, and cultural identity, examining how contemporary music both reflects and shapes public perceptions of Nigerian culture. Findings are expected to inform strategies for preserving linguistic heritage while embracing modern artistic innovation, ultimately contributing to a richer understanding of cultural discourse in Nigeria.

Statement of the problem
Contemporary music in Nigerian Pidgin faces challenges in balancing commercial appeal with authentic cultural discourse (Ibrahim, 2023). Some musical works may dilute cultural messages for broader marketability, while others fail to resonate with the diverse cultural backgrounds of Nigerian audiences. This inconsistency hampers efforts to preserve the linguistic and cultural richness of Nigerian Pidgin. There is a need for systematic analysis of how effectively music translates cultural narratives, as misrepresentations may lead to a loss of cultural identity. This study aims to identify these challenges and assess their impact on the quality of cultural discourse in music.

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate the expression of cultural discourse in Nigerian Pidgin music.

To identify challenges in balancing authenticity and commercial appeal.

To recommend strategies to enhance cultural representation.

Research questions:

How is cultural discourse expressed in Nigerian Pidgin music?

What challenges do artists face in maintaining authenticity?

What measures can improve cultural representation in music?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of Nigerian Pidgin in contemporary music, emphasizing its impact on cultural discourse. The findings will benefit musicians, cultural scholars, and industry stakeholders by promoting strategies that preserve cultural authenticity while engaging a global audience (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to contemporary music in Nigerian Pidgin; excludes other artistic media.

Definitions of terms:

Cultural discourse: The exchange of ideas and values that reflect cultural identity.

Contemporary music: Modern musical expressions and genres.
