Background of the study
This study examines translation practices used in adapting classic literature into the Efik language. Efik literature adaptations aim to preserve timeless narratives while making them accessible to Efik-speaking audiences. Translating classic texts poses unique challenges, as translators must balance fidelity to the original work with the need to convey cultural and historical contexts in Efik (Abasi, 2023). This research reviews adaptations of renowned classics, analyzing how translators handle linguistic style, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references. Data is collected through textual analysis of adapted works, interviews with literary translators, and feedback from readers. The study explores the strategies employed—ranging from literal translation to transcreation—to determine which methods best preserve the literary quality and cultural integrity of classic literature in the Efik language. The findings will provide insights into effective translation practices for literary works, contributing to both cultural preservation and literary innovation (Abasi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Adapting classic literature into Efik presents significant challenges, including loss of stylistic nuance, cultural misinterpretation, and difficulties in conveying historical context (Abasi, 2023). Translators often face the dilemma of either adhering too strictly to the source text or overly localizing the content, thereby compromising literary integrity. Inconsistencies in translation approaches have led to varying reader reception and a potential dilution of the original work’s artistic value. This study seeks to identify the key issues encountered in Efik literary adaptations and evaluate the effectiveness of current translation practices, with the goal of recommending strategies to improve the fidelity and cultural resonance of such translations.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate current translation practices in Efik adaptations of classic literature.
To identify challenges in preserving literary and cultural nuances.
To propose strategies for enhancing translation quality.
Research questions:
What translation approaches are used in Efik literary adaptations?
What challenges do translators encounter in preserving the original text’s essence?
How can adaptation strategies be improved?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into effective translation practices for adapting classic literature into Efik, contributing to cultural preservation and literary innovation. The recommendations will benefit translators, educators, and cultural institutions by promoting higher standards in literary translation (Abasi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Efik adaptations of classic literature, focusing on textual analysis and translator interviews.
Definitions of terms:
Literary adaptation: Translating and modifying a text for a new audience while preserving its core elements.
Transcreation: Creative translation that adapts content to retain artistic and cultural impact.
Fidelity: The degree of accuracy in conveying the original work’s meaning.
