Background of the study
This study examines how cultural context influences the translation of Hausa proverbs into other languages. Hausa proverbs are rich in cultural meaning, encapsulating moral lessons, social norms, and historical experiences. Translating these proverbs requires not only linguistic accuracy but also a deep understanding of the cultural context in which they originated (Sani, 2023). The study analyzes various translation approaches used by professionals, including literal translation, dynamic equivalence, and cultural substitution, to determine how effectively they convey the original meaning. Data is collected through comparative analysis of translated proverbs, interviews with language experts, and surveys of native speakers. The research evaluates the challenges posed by cultural differences, such as the loss of metaphorical meaning and context-specific symbolism, and explores strategies to preserve the integrity of the proverbs in translation. The findings will contribute to developing guidelines for more culturally sensitive translation practices that maintain the depth and nuance of Hausa proverbs (Sani, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Translating Hausa proverbs presents significant challenges due to the deep cultural context embedded in these expressions. Literal translations often fail to capture the metaphorical and symbolic meanings, leading to misinterpretations (Sani, 2023). Cultural nuances are frequently lost when proverbs are rendered into other languages, compromising their intended wisdom and social commentary. The absence of standardized translation practices for culturally rich expressions exacerbates these issues, resulting in inconsistent and diluted translations. This study aims to identify the specific cultural factors that affect the translation of Hausa proverbs and to propose strategies for preserving their original meanings in translated texts.

Objectives of the study:

To analyze the role of cultural context in translating Hausa proverbs.

To identify challenges in preserving metaphorical meanings.

To propose culturally sensitive translation strategies.

Research questions:

How does cultural context influence Hausa proverb translation?

What challenges arise in preserving the original meaning?

What strategies can improve translation fidelity?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the impact of cultural context on Hausa proverb translation, offering insights to improve translation practices and preserve cultural heritage. The findings will benefit translators, educators, and cultural scholars by promoting more accurate and meaningful translations (Sani, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the translation of Hausa proverbs, focusing on cultural context and comparative analyses of translation methods.

Definitions of terms:

Cultural context: The social and historical background that shapes language usage.

Proverbs: Short, traditional sayings that express cultural wisdom.

Dynamic equivalence: A translation approach that emphasizes conveying the original meaning rather than literal wording.
