Background of the study
This study examines interpreter-mediated exchanges in Yoruba community forums held in Abeokuta, where community engagement and cultural dialogue are paramount. In such forums, interpreters play a critical role in bridging linguistic gaps among participants, ensuring that diverse opinions and cultural narratives are effectively communicated (Adewale, 2023). The study focuses on the methods and strategies employed by interpreters to facilitate clear, culturally sensitive communication in settings ranging from local town hall meetings to cultural festivals. Data are collected through direct observation of forum sessions, in-depth interviews with interpreters and participants, and analysis of recorded exchanges. The research explores the effectiveness of different interpreting strategies—such as consecutive and simultaneous interpretation—in managing group discussions, addressing technical challenges, and maintaining the integrity of the original messages. It also investigates the training and support systems available to interpreters in community settings. By providing a detailed assessment of interpreter-mediated communication, this study aims to highlight best practices and identify areas for improvement that will enhance community engagement and promote the sustainable use of Yoruba in public discourse (Adewale, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the central role of interpreters in Yoruba community forums in Abeokuta, several challenges hinder effective communication. Issues such as misinterpretation of local idioms, delays in message delivery, and inconsistent use of interpreting techniques have been observed (Adewale, 2023). These challenges can lead to misunderstandings and reduce the effectiveness of community discussions, ultimately impacting community cohesion and cultural preservation. Furthermore, the lack of formal training and standardized procedures for interpreters in community forums exacerbates these problems. This study aims to identify these challenges and evaluate their impact on interpreter-mediated exchanges, offering recommendations for improving communication processes in Yoruba community forums.

Objectives of the study:

To examine current interpreter-mediated communication in Yoruba community forums.

To identify challenges affecting interpretation quality.

To propose strategies to improve interpreter performance.

Research questions:

What interpreting methods are used in Yoruba community forums?

What challenges affect message clarity?

How can interpreter-mediated exchanges be improved?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses challenges in interpreter-mediated exchanges within Yoruba community forums, aiming to enhance public discourse and cultural engagement. The recommendations will benefit community leaders, interpreter trainers, and cultural institutions in Abeokuta (Adewale, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to interpreter-mediated exchanges in Yoruba community forums in Abeokuta, focusing on live interactions and interviews.

Definitions of terms:

Interpreter-mediated exchanges: Communication facilitated by professional interpreters.

Community forums: Public meetings for discussion and cultural exchange.

Cultural dialogue: Exchange of ideas reflecting cultural values and practices.
