Background of the study
This study appraises multilingual translation practices used in Efik language documentaries produced in Calabar. Documentaries serve as powerful tools for cultural preservation and education, and translating them into multiple languages extends their reach and impact (Etim, 2023). In Calabar, Efik documentaries often incorporate translations into other local languages and English to cater to diverse audiences. The translation process involves challenges such as maintaining narrative coherence, preserving cultural nuances, and adapting technical terminology. This study examines the methodologies adopted by translators, including simultaneous interpretation, subtitling, and voice-over techniques. Data are gathered through content analysis of documentaries, interviews with translation professionals, and audience surveys. The research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of multilingual translation strategies in preserving the documentary’s original message while ensuring accessibility. It also explores the role of collaboration among translators and the impact of digital tools in streamlining the translation process. Ultimately, the study seeks to provide recommendations for improving translation practices in Efik documentaries, thereby supporting cultural dissemination and educational outreach (Etim, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite innovative translation efforts, multilingual translation practices in Efik documentaries face challenges in accurately preserving cultural and narrative integrity (Etim, 2023). Discrepancies in translation quality, loss of cultural context, and technical inconsistencies in subtitles or voice-overs often diminish the documentary’s impact. The absence of standardized translation protocols further complicates efforts, leading to variable audience reception and potential misinterpretations of the original content. This study seeks to identify these issues and assess their implications for documentary quality, aiming to propose strategies that enhance translation consistency and cultural fidelity.

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate current multilingual translation practices in Efik documentaries.

To identify challenges affecting translation quality.

To propose recommendations for improving multilingual translation.

Research questions:

What multilingual translation methods are used in Efik documentaries?

What challenges affect translation consistency?

How can translation practices be standardized?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines translation practices in Efik documentaries, contributing to improved cultural preservation and educational outreach. The findings will guide translators and filmmakers in enhancing documentary quality through standardized translation methods (Etim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Efik language documentaries in Calabar, focusing on translation practices and quality without extending to other media forms.

Definitions of terms:

Multilingual translation: Converting content into multiple languages.

Documentaries: Non-fiction films that document reality.

Translation consistency: Uniformity in translation quality and style.
