Background of the study
This study assesses how technological advancements are reshaping Igbo interpreting services at academic conferences. With globalization and increasing cross-cultural collaboration, academic events now attract participants from diverse linguistic backgrounds, making effective interpretation crucial. In Igbo-speaking regions, recent innovations such as computer-assisted interpreting systems, real-time translation apps, and digital glossaries have been introduced to support interpreters in managing high-stakes academic discourse (Okafor, 2023). These tools aim to reduce response time, improve accuracy, and help interpreters manage complex terminologies. However, the integration of technology in interpretation also brings challenges, including system glitches, over-reliance on automation, and the need for ongoing technical training. This study examines how technology enhances efficiency and accuracy, while considering the human element essential for managing cultural nuances and academic jargon. Through interviews with professional interpreters, surveys of conference organizers, and analysis of performance metrics from recent events, the research seeks to document both the benefits and limitations of current technological applications. The findings are expected to inform future developments and training protocols that combine advanced tools with interpreter expertise, ensuring that technology acts as an enabler rather than a replacement for human judgment. By focusing on academic conferences, this study contributes to the broader discourse on digital transformation in language services, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that leverages innovation while preserving the interpretive integrity of the Igbo language (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the promise of technology in enhancing interpretation, several challenges remain in academic conference settings. Issues such as system malfunctions, inconsistent integration of digital tools, and a lack of comprehensive technical training for interpreters have led to gaps in service quality (Adebayo, 2024). These problems can result in misinterpretation, reduced audience comprehension, and compromised academic discourse. Moreover, there is a risk that over-reliance on technology may undermine the nuanced, culturally informed decisions that experienced interpreters provide. The absence of standardized guidelines for technology use further complicates the scenario, leaving institutions uncertain about best practices. This study aims to identify these challenges and propose solutions that balance technological efficiency with the indispensable role of human expertise.

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate the impact of digital tools on Igbo interpretation efficiency.

To identify challenges in integrating technology in academic conference settings.

To recommend guidelines for optimal use of technology in Igbo interpreting services.

Research questions:

How do digital tools enhance Igbo interpreting performance?

What technological challenges affect interpretation accuracy?

What best practices can be adopted to improve digital tool integration?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the intersection of technology and language services in academic settings, offering insights that can improve interpretation quality. The findings will benefit conference organizers, interpreter training programs, and technology developers by providing actionable recommendations to enhance service delivery in Igbo interpretation (Okafor, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the use of technology in Igbo interpreting at academic conferences, focusing on performance metrics and user feedback without examining other language sectors.

Definitions of terms:

Digital tools: Software and applications used to aid interpretation.

Interpretation efficiency: The speed and accuracy with which interpreters convey messages.

Academic conferences: Organized events for scholarly discussion and exchange.
