Background of the study
This study explores the effect of code-switching on translation quality in Yoruba digital content, a phenomenon increasingly prevalent in modern communication. Code-switching—the alternation between Yoruba and English—is common in social media, blogs, and online news in Nigeria, reflecting bilingual realities and cultural hybridity (Akinyele, 2023). While code-switching can enrich communication by incorporating multiple linguistic nuances, it also poses challenges for translators tasked with maintaining consistency, clarity, and cultural relevance. The research analyzes digital texts that exhibit varying degrees of code-switching, examining how these practices impact translation quality when rendered into a single target language. Interviews with digital content creators and professional translators, along with content analysis of online texts, are used to understand the balance between preserving original meaning and adapting to target language norms. The study further investigates whether code-switching enhances or detracts from the overall quality of the translation, providing insights into best practices for managing bilingual content in digital media (Akinyele, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Code-switching in Yoruba digital content introduces challenges in achieving high-quality translations. Inconsistent handling of mixed-language texts can result in loss of meaning, diminished readability, and reduced cultural resonance (Akinyele, 2023). Translators often struggle with determining the appropriate balance between maintaining original linguistic styles and adapting the text for a monolingual audience. The absence of standardized guidelines for code-switching further complicates the translation process, leading to variability in translation outcomes. This study aims to identify these challenges and assess their impact on translation quality, with the goal of developing recommendations for managing code-switched content more effectively.
Objectives of the study:
To analyze the impact of code-switching on the quality of Yoruba digital translations.
To identify challenges faced by translators when handling code-switched texts.
To recommend best practices for managing bilingual content.
Research questions:
How does code-switching affect translation quality in Yoruba digital content?
What challenges do translators face in this context?
What guidelines can improve the translation of code-switched texts?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the impact of code-switching on translation quality, a key issue in the digital communication landscape. The findings will inform translators, content creators, and policy developers, enabling more effective management of bilingual content while preserving cultural and linguistic integrity (Akinyele, 2023).
