Background of the study
This study examines the impact of translator training on the accuracy of Efik language interpretation in Calabar. As demand grows for high-quality interpretation services in educational, legal, and media contexts, the role of well-trained translators becomes paramount (Abasi, 2024). In Calabar, where Efik is a central marker of cultural identity, interpreter accuracy is critical to ensure that meaning, cultural nuance, and context are preserved in both live and recorded settings. The study investigates the current training programs available for Efik translators, focusing on curriculum design, practical exercises, and professional development opportunities. It also assesses the correlation between training quality and interpretation accuracy by comparing performance metrics of trained versus untrained interpreters. Interviews with translation experts, classroom observations, and evaluation of interpreter output are employed to provide a comprehensive analysis. The goal is to identify training gaps and recommend improvements that will enhance interpreter performance, thereby promoting better communication and cultural preservation in Efik language services (Abasi, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the importance of high-quality interpreter training, Efik language interpretation in Calabar often suffers from inconsistencies in accuracy and cultural representation. Inadequate training programs, insufficient practical exposure, and outdated curricula contribute to errors and misinterpretations during live and recorded translations (Abasi, 2024). These challenges undermine effective communication in settings where precise interpretation is critical, such as legal proceedings and educational forums. The study aims to identify the shortcomings in current training methodologies and evaluate their impact on interpretation accuracy, ultimately proposing strategies to improve the professional development of Efik translators.
Objectives of the study:
To assess the effectiveness of current translator training programs for Efik.
To identify gaps affecting interpretation accuracy.
To propose recommendations for enhancing training methods.
Research questions:
How effective are current training programs for Efik translators?
What factors contribute to inaccuracies in interpretation?
How can training methodologies be improved?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the correlation between translator training and interpretation accuracy in Efik language services. The findings will provide actionable insights for training institutions, policymakers, and professional bodies to refine curricula and enhance interpreter performance, thus supporting better communication and cultural preservation in Calabar (Abasi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating translator training programs for Efik language interpretation in Calabar, focusing on interpreter performance and training curricula.
Definitions of terms:
Translator training: Educational programs designed to improve translation and interpretation skills.
Interpretation accuracy: The degree to which interpreted content faithfully reflects the source.
Professional development: Ongoing training aimed at improving job performance.
