Background of the study
Social media platforms significantly influence linguistic practices in Nigeria, reshaping how individuals communicate in both private and public spheres. WhatsApp, known for its instant messaging and group chats, encourages informal, conversational language characterized by abbreviations, emojis, and spontaneous expressions. In contrast, Twitter’s public, character-limited format fosters succinct, often stylized language that integrates hashtags and abbreviations to convey complex ideas quickly (Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines the impact of these platforms on Nigerian linguistic practices by analyzing communication on WhatsApp and Twitter. It explores how digital affordances, audience expectations, and cultural factors drive variations in language use, ultimately affecting traditional language norms. By comparing these two distinct communication contexts, the research aims to shed light on the evolving nature of Nigerian language in the digital age and provide insights into how online practices influence offline speech patterns (Okafor, 2024).

Statement of the problem
While social media’s impact on language is widely recognized, there is limited research comparing the specific influences of platforms such as WhatsApp and Twitter on Nigerian linguistic practices. Existing studies often generalize digital communication without addressing the nuanced differences between private and public messaging, thereby restricting our understanding of their differential effects on language evolution (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare language practices on WhatsApp and Twitter among Nigerian users.
  2. To identify key digital and cultural factors affecting linguistic variation.
  3. To assess the implications for traditional language norms.

Research questions

  1. How do WhatsApp and Twitter influence language use in Nigeria?
  2. What factors drive the observed linguistic differences?
  3. What impact do these practices have on conventional language?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative evaluation of private and public digital communication, offering insights into the transformative effects of social media on Nigerian language practices. The findings will inform language education and policy in a digital era (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on WhatsApp and Twitter interactions among Nigerian users; it does not extend to other platforms or offline communication.

Definitions of terms
• Linguistic Practices: The habitual use of language in communication.
• Digital Communication: Interaction through online platforms.
