Background of the study
Code‑switching—the practice of alternating between languages within a conversation—is a central feature of Nigerian digital communication. WhatsApp group chats, in particular, serve as intimate spaces where users fluidly mix indigenous languages and English to express identity, humor, and social solidarity (Ibrahim, 2023). These interactions reveal the complex interplay between multilingual competence and digital media affordances. The informal, fast-paced nature of WhatsApp encourages spontaneous language alternation, reflecting everyday conversational patterns. This study examines code‑switching practices in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats by analyzing the frequency, contexts, and sociolinguistic motivations behind these shifts. It aims to provide a nuanced understanding of how digital environments influence multilingual communication and contribute to evolving language practices (Okafor, 2024). The research will offer insights into the role of code‑switching in identity formation and social cohesion, bridging traditional sociolinguistic theories with modern digital practices.

Statement of the problem
Although code‑switching is widely observed in Nigerian online communication, few studies have focused specifically on WhatsApp group chats. Existing research often generalizes multilingual practices without considering the unique dynamics of private, group-based interactions. This research gap limits our understanding of how digital contexts shape code‑switching behavior and its impact on language evolution, thereby impeding the formulation of targeted sociolinguistic models (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study
• Document code‑switching patterns in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats.
• Examine sociocultural factors influencing these practices.
• Assess the implications for language evolution and social identity.

Research questions
• What are the predominant code‑switching patterns in WhatsApp group chats?
• Which factors drive these multilingual practices?
• How does code‑switching affect identity and language change?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers an in-depth examination of code‑switching in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats. Its findings will enhance our understanding of digital multilingualism and inform strategies for effective communication and language education in diverse digital environments (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses solely on WhatsApp group chats among Nigerian users, excluding other social media platforms and offline interactions.

Definitions of terms
• Code‑Switching: Alternating between languages in a conversation.
• Digital Communication: Interaction via online messaging platforms.
• Multilingualism: The use of multiple languages within a single discourse.
