Background of the study
Hashtag neologisms have become a defining feature of Nigerian digital discourse, particularly on Twitter. Users creatively combine words, abbreviations, and symbols to coin new expressions that reflect current social and cultural trends (Ibrahim, 2023). These lexical innovations—often embedded within trending hashtags—demonstrate how digital platforms facilitate morphological variation and language evolution. This study appraises the nature and frequency of hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter discourse by comparing various trends. It examines the processes of word formation, including blending, clipping, and affixation, and explores how sociocultural factors drive lexical creativity. The investigation provides insights into the role of digital media in reshaping traditional language, thereby contributing to theoretical models of morphological innovation in the digital age (Okafor, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the proliferation of hashtag neologisms on Nigerian Twitter, there is a lack of systematic research examining their formation and impact on language structure. Existing studies often focus on the social impact of hashtags while neglecting their linguistic innovation. This gap limits our understanding of the mechanisms driving morphological variation and hinders the development of comprehensive digital lexicology models (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study
• Document and analyze hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter trends.
• Identify the word formation processes underlying these neologisms.
• Evaluate the impact on conventional morphological structures.

Research questions
• What types of hashtag neologisms are common in Nigerian Twitter discourse?
• Which word formation processes are most prevalent?
• How do these innovations affect traditional language norms?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores how digital media drives morphological innovation in Nigerian language. Its findings will inform both theoretical frameworks and practical applications in digital linguistics and language planning (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to hashtag neologisms on Nigerian Twitter; excludes other platforms and offline language practices.

Definitions of terms
• Neologisms: Newly coined words or expressions.
• Hashtag Trends: Popular hashtags that capture cultural phenomena.
• Morphological Variation: Differences in word structure and formation.
