Background of the study
Nigeria’s multilingual landscape is vividly reflected in its digital communication practices. On platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp, users seamlessly alternate between indigenous languages and English—a practice known as code‑switching (Ibrahim, 2023). WhatsApp, characterized by its informal, real‑time messaging, fosters spontaneous code‑switching that mirrors everyday conversational dynamics. Conversely, Facebook—being more public and structured—often exhibits strategic language alternation to suit broader audience expectations. This study appraises code‑switching practices across these platforms to uncover the linguistic, cultural, and contextual drivers behind this phenomenon. It explores how factors such as group identity, audience, and conversational context shape language choices in digital environments. By comparing data from WhatsApp group chats and Facebook posts, the research aims to elucidate the differences and similarities in code‑switching behavior, contributing to a deeper understanding of multilingual communication in Nigeria (Okafor, 2024). The investigation is positioned within the broader framework of digital sociolinguistics and aims to inform language education and policy regarding digital multilingual practices.

Statement of the problem
While code‑switching is prevalent in Nigerian digital discourse, few studies have directly compared its manifestation on platforms with differing communicative contexts. Existing research often treats code‑switching uniformly, neglecting the nuanced variations between private (WhatsApp) and public (Facebook) interactions (Chukwu, 2023). This lack of comparative analysis limits our understanding of how specific digital contexts influence language alternation, thereby restricting theoretical insights and practical guidelines for managing multilingual digital communication (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the study
• Document and compare code‑switching patterns on Facebook and WhatsApp.
• Identify the sociocultural factors that drive language alternation in these platforms.
• Evaluate the impact of code‑switching on digital identity and communication efficacy.

Research questions
• How do code‑switching patterns differ between Facebook and WhatsApp in Nigerian online communities?
• What social and contextual factors influence these practices?
• How does code‑switching affect user identity and communication outcomes?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative examination of code‑switching in two major Nigerian social media platforms. The insights will enhance our understanding of digital multilingual practices, informing educators and policymakers about the role of context in shaping language use and facilitating effective communication in diverse settings (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to Facebook posts and WhatsApp group chats among Nigerian users, excluding other platforms and offline interactions.

Definitions of terms
• Code‑Switching: Alternating between two or more languages in a conversation.
• Digital Discourse: Communication in online environments.
• Multilingualism: The use of multiple languages in communication.
