Background of the study
Digital media platforms have redefined spoken language by creating spaces for experimentation in phonetic expression. In Nigeria, TikTok lip‑sync videos provide an exemplary site for such innovation. Users purposefully exaggerate pronunciation, modify intonation patterns, and alter rhythm to enhance the performative quality of their content (Ibrahim, 2023). These practices result in noticeable phonological variation that both reflects local dialectal features and incorporates global digital trends. The platform’s built‑in editing tools, sound filters, and user-generated challenges encourage the adoption of non‑conventional speech patterns, thereby creating a new auditory lexicon that deviates from traditional norms. This study examines these phonetic modifications by analyzing a corpus of TikTok lip‑sync videos, investigating how digital affordances and social influences drive these variations. It considers factors such as peer feedback, viral hashtag trends, and regional influences that collectively shape pronunciation and speech dynamics. The interplay between performativity and digital enhancement produces emergent phonetic norms which may gradually influence everyday speech. By situating the study at the intersection of digital sociophonetics and performance studies, the research aims to provide insights into the transformative impact of social media on Nigerian phonetic articulation (Okafor, 2024). Such an investigation will contribute to updating theoretical models of phonetics to include digital influences, reflecting the evolving nature of spoken language in contemporary society.

Statement of the problem
Despite the popularity of TikTok lip‑sync videos in Nigeria, there is scant research addressing their impact on phonetic variation. Existing literature tends to focus on content virality and visual creativity rather than the subtle phonetic modifications users adopt (Chukwu, 2023). Consequently, the mechanisms by which digital editing and performance practices influence everyday speech remain underexplored. This gap inhibits our ability to integrate these emerging phonetic trends into conventional models, leaving educators and language planners with an incomplete understanding of digital linguistic evolution (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the study
• Examine the specific phonetic variations in TikTok lip‑sync videos.
• Identify digital and sociocultural factors that influence these variations.
• Assess the implications of these phonetic changes for traditional speech patterns.

Research questions
• What are the predominant phonetic modifications observed in TikTok lip‑sync content?
• How do digital affordances (e.g., sound filters) and social trends drive these variations?
• In what ways do these changes compare with conventional phonetic norms?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it documents the influence of digital media on phonetic articulation among Nigerian youth. By revealing how TikTok lip‑sync trends reshape pronunciation, the research informs linguists and educators about emerging digital speech patterns. The findings will be crucial for updating phonetic models and guiding language policy in an era of rapidly evolving digital communication (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is confined to analyzing TikTok lip‑sync videos among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline speech practices.

Definitions of terms
• Phonetic Variation: Differences in speech sound production among speakers.
• Lip‑Sync Videos: Short-form digital videos where users mimic spoken content.
• Digital Phonetics: The study of speech patterns emerging from online media.
