Background of the study
Digital influencers have reshaped language practices across social media, particularly affecting syntactic patterns in their content. In Nigeria, influencers on Instagram and YouTube craft discourses that blend traditional grammar with innovative syntax to engage diverse audiences (Ibrahim, 2023). Instagram content, characterized by concise captions and visual narratives, often features non-standard syntactic structures, while YouTube videos, with their longer formats, allow for more elaborate and dynamic language use. This study compares the syntactic innovations introduced by digital influencer discourse on these two platforms, exploring how stylistic choices, audience engagement, and platform affordances drive language change. It examines the interplay between formal language norms and creative expression, highlighting how influencers contribute to the evolution of syntax in Nigerian digital communication (Okafor, 2024). The research provides a detailed analysis of syntactic patterns, offering insights into the broader impact of digital media on language structure and cultural identity.
Statement of the problem
Although digital influencer discourse significantly impacts language use, there is limited comparative research on how influencers on Instagram and YouTube affect syntactic patterns in Nigeria. Existing studies often address influencer impact generally without dissecting the differences between platforms. This gap prevents a nuanced understanding of how platform-specific affordances and audience dynamics shape syntactic innovation, hindering the formulation of targeted strategies for language education and media literacy (Chukwu, 2023).
