Background of the study
Digital visual narratives have transformed language by merging imagery with textual expression, especially on platforms like Instagram. Nigerian users often craft innovative captions for Instagram Stories, blending traditional syntax with creative alterations that align with visual storytelling (Okafor, 2024). These captions frequently employ non-standard sentence structures, unique punctuation, and inventive word order to enhance the narrative conveyed by images and videos (Ibrahim, 2023). The interplay between visual content and textual expression fosters a dynamic environment in which conventional syntactic norms are continually reinterpreted. This study examines the impact of digital visual narratives on Nigerian syntax by comparing Instagram Story captions. It investigates how the visual modality influences text composition and leads to syntactic innovation. By analyzing a corpus of captions, the research aims to document emerging syntactic patterns and assess their implications for language evolution in digital contexts (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although Instagram Story captions are widely used in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited research on their syntactic impact. Most studies focus on visual storytelling without analyzing the accompanying textual modifications (Chukwu, 2023). This research gap limits our understanding of how digital visual narratives drive syntactic innovation and affect traditional grammatical frameworks. Without a comparative study, the unique contributions of visual content to language change remain underexplored (Ibrahim, 2023).
