Background of the study
Semantic networks represent the interconnected meanings that emerge from language use, and digital communication has transformed how these networks are formed. In Nigeria, platforms such as Facebook and Twitter serve as dynamic spaces where users create and modify semantic associations through their interactions. On Facebook, extended discussions and community engagement contribute to rich, multi-layered semantic webs, while Twitter’s brevity fosters rapid, concise exchanges that generate streamlined semantic links (Ibrahim, 2023). This study evaluates the impact of digital communication on Nigerian semantic networks by comparing language practices on Facebook and Twitter. It investigates how social context, audience interaction, and platform constraints influence the evolution of meaning. The research documents instances of semantic shifts, word associations, and evolving connotations as users respond to current events, cultural narratives, and digital trends (Okafor, 2024). Through a comparative analysis, the study aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of how digital discourse reshapes the semantic fabric of Nigerian language, contributing to broader theories of language change in online environments (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the importance of semantic networks in understanding digital communication, there is limited comparative research on how platforms like Facebook and Twitter influence meaning-making in Nigeria. Existing studies often treat online discourse as a monolithic entity, ignoring platform-specific effects on semantic evolution (Chukwu, 2023). This gap hampers our ability to fully understand the processes that drive semantic shifts in digital environments and their implications for traditional language models (Ibrahim, 2023).
