Background of the study
Hashtag campaigns have become central to political and social mobilization on Twitter, and they are increasingly influencing language use in Nigeria. These campaigns encourage users to condense complex ideas into succinct, innovative expressions, resulting in modifications to morphosyntactic structures. Nigerian Twitter users creatively manipulate word order, punctuation, and grammatical constructions in response to hashtag-driven narratives (Ibrahim, 2023). Such campaigns, often tied to social and political causes, foster an environment where digital activism intersects with language innovation. This study compares the morphosyntactic changes associated with different Twitter hashtag campaigns, examining how these digital movements reshape traditional grammatical frameworks (Okafor, 2024). By analyzing tweet corpora from various hashtag movements, the research aims to document systematic shifts in syntax and morphology, providing a deeper understanding of the interplay between digital activism and linguistic transformation (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
While hashtag campaigns are known to influence language use on Twitter, research on their specific impact on morphosyntactic structures in Nigeria is limited. Existing studies often focus on campaign effectiveness or social mobilization rather than on detailed linguistic changes (Chukwu, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how digital activism drives structural language innovation. Without a comprehensive analysis, the processes underlying these morphosyntactic changes remain unclear, restricting the development of effective linguistic models for digital discourse (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it elucidates the impact of hashtag campaigns on morphosyntax in Nigerian digital discourse. The findings will provide valuable insights for linguists and digital media scholars by revealing how online activism drives language change and by informing theoretical models of digital linguistics (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to Nigerian Twitter movements; it does not consider other social media platforms or offline language practices.
