Background of the study
Hashtag neologisms have emerged as a distinctive feature of digital discourse, particularly on Twitter. In Nigeria, users employ hashtags not only for categorization but also to innovate linguistically by coining new words and expressions (Ibrahim, 2023). These neologisms often encapsulate cultural phenomena, social movements, and political sentiments, serving as dynamic markers of language evolution. The rapid spread and iterative modification of hashtag-based terms on Twitter contribute to a vibrant linguistic landscape where traditional vocabulary is continuously expanded and reshaped. This study appraises hashtag neologisms by comparing different Twitter trends in Nigeria, examining the processes of word formation, dissemination, and normalization within online communities (Okafor, 2024). The research highlights how digital platforms stimulate lexical creativity and reflects the socio-political milieu of Nigerian society. By analyzing a corpus of trending hashtags, the study aims to provide insights into the mechanisms of digital lexical innovation and assess their broader implications for language change (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing prevalence of hashtag neologisms in Nigerian digital discourse, there is limited systematic research on their formation and impact. Existing studies often overlook the lexical innovations driven by hashtags, focusing instead on content and sentiment analysis (Chukwu, 2023). This gap impedes our understanding of how digital language practices transform traditional vocabulary and grammatical norms. Without a comprehensive comparative analysis of Twitter trends, the processes underlying hashtag neologism creation remain insufficiently explored, limiting theoretical advancement in digital linguistics (Ibrahim, 2023).

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of hashtag neologisms in Nigerian digital discourse. The findings will offer valuable insights for linguists and media scholars by illustrating how online practices drive lexical innovation and influence language evolution (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter trends; it does not include other platforms or offline language practices.
