Background of the study
Viral social media trends, particularly through memes on Instagram, have become instrumental in driving linguistic innovation in Nigeria. Memes, as humorous and culturally resonant digital artifacts, often combine visual elements with creative text that challenges conventional language use (Okafor, 2024). Nigerian Instagram memes showcase inventive wordplay, neologisms, and syntactic creativity that reflect the dynamic interplay of global digital trends and local cultural identities. These linguistic innovations are not only a reflection of contemporary social realities but also actively shape the evolution of language. This study investigates how viral Instagram memes contribute to linguistic innovation by analyzing their textual components and the underlying creative processes that generate new language forms (Ibrahim, 2023). The research aims to document these emerging linguistic practices and assess their broader implications for Nigerian language and culture (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although viral Instagram memes have a significant impact on linguistic innovation in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research on the specific mechanisms by which these memes drive language change. Existing literature often emphasizes the cultural or humorous aspects of memes, overlooking their role in lexical and syntactic innovation. This gap limits our understanding of how viral trends contribute to the evolution of language, impeding the development of comprehensive models of digital linguistic innovation (Chukwu, 2023).

The findings will inform linguists, digital media scholars, and cultural researchers about the mechanisms of online language change and their broader cultural implications (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on Instagram memes among Nigerian users and does not extend to other platforms or offline language practices.
