Background of the study
Digital code‑switching, the practice of alternating between languages in online interactions, is a prevalent phenomenon in Nigeria’s multilingual society. WhatsApp and Facebook serve as primary platforms where code‑switching occurs frequently, reflecting the fluid linguistic practices of Nigerian users (Ibrahim, 2023). On WhatsApp, private and informal conversations allow for seamless transitions between local languages and English, while Facebook, with its more public nature, often exhibits a hybridized form of language mixing that balances informality with public decorum (Okafor, 2024). This study evaluates digital code‑switching by comparing practices on WhatsApp and Facebook. It examines how users navigate different communicative contexts and how these shifts impact language identity, social interaction, and communication efficiency. The research analyzes textual data to identify patterns, functions, and motivations behind code‑switching, highlighting the role of digital environments in facilitating multilingual expression (Adebayo, 2023). By exploring these dynamics, the study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of digital multilingualism and inform strategies for language education and policy in a diverse linguistic landscape.

Statement of the problem
Although digital code‑switching is common in Nigerian online communication, there is limited comparative research on its manifestation on platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook. Existing literature often treats code‑switching as a singular phenomenon, failing to account for the differing contextual demands of private versus public digital interactions (Chukwu, 2023). This research gap limits our understanding of how platform-specific features influence language alternation and the resulting effects on user identity and communication practices. Without detailed investigation, the nuances of digital code‑switching remain inadequately understood, hindering theoretical and practical advancements in digital sociolinguistics (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare code‑switching practices on WhatsApp and Facebook among Nigerian users.
  2. To identify the factors influencing digital code‑switching in different contexts.
  3. To evaluate the impact of these practices on language identity and communication.

Research questions

  1. How does digital code‑switching differ between WhatsApp and Facebook in Nigeria?
  2. What contextual factors influence these code‑switching practices?
  3. What are the implications of digital code‑switching for user identity and communication?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of digital code‑switching on WhatsApp and Facebook in Nigeria. The insights will enhance our understanding of multilingual communication in digital environments and inform educational and policy approaches to language diversity in online contexts (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on digital code‑switching in WhatsApp and Facebook interactions among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other platforms or offline communication, ensuring a focused analysis.

Definitions of terms

  • Code‑Switching: The practice of alternating between languages within a single conversation.
  • Digital Communication: Interaction that occurs through online platforms.
