Background of the study
Digital visual narratives have transformed communication by combining visual elements with textual content. In Nigeria, Instagram Story captions are emerging as a distinctive medium where digital visual narratives influence morphosyntactic patterns. Users creatively craft captions that complement their visual content, often blending traditional grammatical structures with innovative morphosyntactic forms (Okoro, 2023). These captions reflect a convergence of visual storytelling and linguistic experimentation, as users modify sentence structures, word orders, and punctuation to align with the narrative depicted in their stories. The interplay between imagery and text on Instagram has led to a dynamic linguistic environment where conventional language rules are reinterpreted and reinvented to suit digital aesthetics (Ibrahim, 2024). This study explores the effects of digital visual narratives on Nigerian morphosyntax by examining a corpus of Instagram Story captions. It investigates how users employ creative strategies to merge visual and linguistic elements, leading to the emergence of new syntactic patterns. The research aims to contribute to the broader understanding of digital language evolution and provide insights into how visual narratives can reshape traditional morphosyntactic norms in online communication (Adebayo, 2024).
Statement of the problem
While Instagram Story captions have gained popularity as a form of digital narrative, there is limited research on how these visual narratives influence morphosyntactic structures in Nigerian language. Existing studies have predominantly focused on visual content without addressing the accompanying textual modifications (Chukwu, 2023). This gap hinders our understanding of the impact of digital visual narratives on language structure. Without systematic analysis, the contribution of innovative captioning practices to morphosyntactic change remains unclear, limiting the ability of linguists and educators to integrate these phenomena into broader language models (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the influence of digital visual narratives on Nigerian morphosyntax, providing insights into the interplay between imagery and language. The findings will be valuable for linguists, media scholars, and educators by highlighting how visual storytelling reshapes traditional language structures (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing Instagram Story captions among Nigerian users, focusing exclusively on morphosyntactic patterns. It does not extend to other forms of digital narratives or offline communication, ensuring a targeted examination of the specified phenomenon.
