Background of the Study
Digital language innovation in Nigeria is thriving as social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram provide fertile ground for creative expression. Users on these platforms are generating novel linguistic forms through inventive wordplay, emoji usage, and restructured syntax to capture contemporary experiences and cultural identities (Oluwaseun, 2023). On Facebook, longer posts allow for more elaborate narrative constructions, while Instagram’s visually-driven content encourages concise, impactful expressions. This divergence has led to a rich diversity of digital language innovations that not only reflect but also shape modern Nigerian identity. The study examines how Facebook and Instagram posts serve as vehicles for language change, focusing on the processes of lexical creation, syntactic adaptation, and the incorporation of multimedia elements into written discourse. By analyzing user-generated content across these platforms, the research aims to document emerging trends in digital language innovation, explore their sociolinguistic implications, and assess the broader impact on traditional language practices (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although digital language innovation is evident in Nigerian social media, there is limited comparative research on how different platforms drive these changes. The distinct affordances of Facebook and Instagram lead to varied linguistic adaptations, yet current literature does not adequately address these differences. This gap in research limits our understanding of how digital contexts foster new lexical and syntactic forms and how these innovations influence everyday language use. Without a systematic analysis of platform-specific language innovation, theoretical models of digital communication remain incomplete, hindering efforts to capture the full impact of social media on Nigerian language evolution (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To compare language innovations on Facebook and Instagram.

  • To analyze the processes of lexical and syntactic adaptation.

  • To evaluate the impact on traditional language practices.

Research Questions

  • What new linguistic forms emerge on Facebook versus Instagram?

  • How do platform features influence language innovation?

  • What are the implications for Nigerian language evolution?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative appraisal of digital language innovation in Nigerian social media, highlighting the transformative impact of Facebook and Instagram on contemporary language. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and inform digital communication strategies, offering valuable insights for educators, media professionals, and policymakers (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to Facebook and Instagram posts in Nigerian digital discourse.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Language Innovation: The creation of new linguistic forms in online environments.

  • Facebook Posts: Extended user-generated content on Facebook.

  • Instagram Posts: Image-centric posts with accompanying text on Instagram.
