Background of the Study
Twitter captions in Nigeria represent a unique intersection of brevity and creativity, where users innovate morphologically to communicate complex ideas succinctly. In this digital space, morphological variation is evidenced by the use of abbreviations, blends, and novel word formations that diverge from conventional language norms (Akinola, 2023). Nigerian Twitter users frequently adapt lexical items to suit character limitations and to capture trending topics, resulting in a dynamic and constantly evolving vocabulary. These morphological adaptations not only reflect individual creativity but also serve as markers of collective cultural identity. As users interact and share content, new morphological forms emerge rapidly, influencing both online discourse and everyday language. The study aims to document these variations in Twitter captions, analyze their linguistic structure, and understand how digital constraints foster morphological innovation. This investigation provides insights into the processes of word formation in online environments and the broader implications for language change in Nigerian society (Oluwaseun, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although morphological innovations in Twitter captions are evident, there is limited systematic research on how these variations develop and what factors drive their adoption in Nigerian digital communication. Traditional linguistic models may not fully account for the rapid and context‑specific morphological adaptations observed online. This research gap hinders our understanding of the mechanisms behind word formation in digital spaces and limits the development of comprehensive models of language evolution. Addressing this issue is essential for capturing the full impact of digital communication on morphological structures and for understanding how social media influences language innovation (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To identify morphological variations in Nigerian Twitter captions.

  • To analyze the linguistic processes behind these variations.

  • To evaluate the influence of digital constraints on word formation.

Research Questions

  • What morphological variations are common in Twitter captions?

  • How do digital constraints influence morphological innovation?

  • What linguistic processes underlie the creation of new word forms online?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the morphological adaptations that characterize Nigerian Twitter captions, providing a deeper understanding of digital word formation. The findings will contribute to theoretical models of language change in online environments and offer practical insights for linguists and digital communication experts interested in the evolving nature of morphology in social media discourse (Akinola, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphological Variation: Changes in word forms and structures.

  • Twitter Captions: Short textual content accompanying tweets.

  • Word Formation: The process of creating new words or expressions.
