Background of the Study
Phonological processes in digital media reflect the dynamic nature of spoken language as influenced by online trends. This study focuses on TikTok audio clips to investigate how Nigerian users adapt and modify phonological features such as pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns in digital content. TikTok’s interactive and creative environment encourages users to experiment with vocal delivery, often resulting in unique phonetic variations that deviate from traditional norms (Adebayo, 2023). These adaptations may include regional accent features, intentional mispronunciations, and playful vocal modulations that serve to entertain or convey social messages. The rapid dissemination of these audio clips fosters the spread of novel phonological patterns, which in turn can influence everyday speech. By analyzing a range of TikTok audio samples, this study seeks to document the phonological processes at work and assess their broader implications for digital communication and linguistic evolution in Nigeria (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
While TikTok has emerged as a key platform for vocal expression in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research on the phonological processes evident in its audio content. The unique features of TikTok encourage creative manipulation of speech sounds, yet these phenomena are not well documented. This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of how digital media influences phonological adaptation and its potential impact on spoken language trends (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To identify key phonological processes in Nigerian TikTok audio clips.
To analyze how these processes manifest across different content types.
To evaluate the impact of digital media on traditional phonological norms.
Research Questions
What phonological variations are present in Nigerian TikTok audio clips?
How do digital trends influence these phonological processes?
What are the implications for the evolution of spoken language in Nigeria?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the interplay between digital media and phonological adaptation in Nigerian TikTok content. The findings will enhance our understanding of language evolution in digital contexts, offering valuable insights for linguists, sociolinguists, and digital media researchers (Akinola, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.
