Background of the Study
Digital linguistic creativity has become a hallmark of Nigerian online communities, where users invent novel expressions, slang, and communication strategies. This study compares the manifestations of linguistic creativity on Twitter and TikTok, two platforms that offer distinct modes of interaction. On Twitter, users craft witty, concise messages often laden with puns and cultural references, while TikTok promotes a dynamic interplay of audio-visual content that spurs inventive language use (Oluwatobi, 2023). Nigerian users on these platforms experiment with wordplay, neologisms, and unconventional syntax, reflecting a vibrant digital culture that continually adapts to new communication forms. The study investigates how the design and affordances of each platform foster different types of linguistic innovation, highlighting the role of digital media in shaping modern language. By comparing these platforms, the research aims to understand the factors that drive digital linguistic creativity and how these innovations contribute to cultural identity and social change (Chukwu, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite clear indicators of linguistic creativity on digital platforms, there is a lack of comparative research focusing on Twitter and TikTok in Nigeria. The unique features of these platforms lead to divergent language practices, yet systematic analysis remains limited. This gap hinders our understanding of how digital environments stimulate linguistic innovation and what impact these creative practices have on broader communication trends (Adeniyi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To compare linguistic creativity on Nigerian Twitter and TikTok.
To identify the innovative language features unique to each platform.
To assess the cultural impact of digital linguistic creativity.
Research Questions
What are the distinctive linguistic innovations on Twitter versus TikTok?
How do platform-specific features influence language creativity?
What is the cultural significance of these digital language practices?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of digital linguistic creativity in Nigerian online communities. The findings will contribute to our understanding of how social media platforms shape language evolution, with implications for communication theory and digital cultural studies (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing digital linguistic creativity on Nigerian Twitter and TikTok and does not cover other social media platforms or offline language practices.
