Background of the Study
Syntax, the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences, is undergoing significant transformation in the digital era. In Nigeria, platforms such as Twitter and Facebook exhibit evolving syntactic patterns influenced by constraints like character limits, informal communication styles, and multimedia integration. This study investigates how Nigerian users adapt their syntactic constructions in Twitter and Facebook posts. Twitter’s brevity often leads to fragmented, elliptical structures, while Facebook posts may display more complex sentence forms that blend traditional grammar with innovative digital expressions (Ibekwe, 2023). These syntactic adaptations reflect broader social and technological shifts that redefine how meaning is constructed online. Factors such as code-switching, digital slang, and the integration of emojis further complicate conventional syntax. By analyzing user-generated content on these platforms, the study aims to uncover the interplay between digital constraints and linguistic creativity. The research also considers how these syntactic changes influence public discourse and identity formation in Nigeria, offering a comprehensive account of language evolution in online environments (Adeniyi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite noticeable syntactic changes in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited research focusing on how platforms like Twitter and Facebook contribute to these variations. The interplay between digital constraints and syntactic innovation remains underexplored, leading to gaps in understanding how modern online language is structured. This lack of systematic analysis hampers efforts to develop comprehensive models of digital syntax, especially in multilingual societies where code-switching further complicates syntactic norms (Chukwu, 2023).
