Background of the Study
Digital language practices on social media are evolving rapidly, with platforms like Instagram and TikTok fostering unique linguistic innovations. This study compares language practices on these platforms, focusing on the integration of visual and textual communication in Nigerian digital discourse. On Instagram, users blend images with creative captions, while TikTok encourages short, dynamic videos often accompanied by concise text overlays. Nigerian users harness these platforms to express identity, humor, and cultural values, leading to emergent language forms that differ significantly from traditional written communication (Adebayo, 2023). The study examines how factors such as platform design, audience engagement, and content type influence language practices. It also explores the role of digital affordances in promoting linguistic creativity, including the use of slang, emoji, and abbreviations. By providing a comparative analysis, the research aims to highlight the divergent and convergent aspects of digital language on Instagram and TikTok, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of how technology shapes contemporary language use (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant impact of digital media on language, there is limited comparative research on how platforms like Instagram and TikTok foster distinct language practices in Nigeria. The lack of systematic analysis of these practices limits our understanding of the influence of visual and interactive elements on language innovation. This study addresses this gap by comparing linguistic features and user engagement on these platforms, providing empirical insights into the evolving nature of digital language (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To compare digital language practices on Nigerian Instagram and TikTok.

  • To identify the role of visual and textual elements in shaping language use.

  • To assess the impact of platform-specific features on linguistic creativity.

Research Questions

  • What are the key differences in language practices between Instagram and TikTok in Nigeria?

  • How do visual and textual elements interact to influence language use?

  • What is the impact of platform design on digital linguistic creativity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of digital language practices in Nigerian social media. The findings inform educators, linguists, and digital media practitioners about the influence of platform-specific features on language evolution, offering new insights into contemporary digital communication trends (Akinola, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing digital language practices on Nigerian Instagram and TikTok. It does not cover other social media platforms or offline communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Language Practices: Innovative linguistic behaviors that emerge in online environments.

  • Instagram: A visual social media platform emphasizing image-based content with accompanying text.

  • TikTok: A short-form video platform that integrates audio-visual elements with concise textual overlays.
