Background of the Study
Social media trends are powerful drivers of language change, influencing both lexical choices and deeper grammatical structures. In Nigeria, Twitter hashtag campaigns have emerged as influential phenomena that shape morphosyntactic features of language. This study investigates how trending hashtags on Twitter affect sentence structure, word order, and grammatical conventions among Nigerian users. As hashtag campaigns mobilize public opinion and social movements, they also create new spaces for linguistic experimentation and innovation (Chukwu, 2023). Users adapt traditional morphosyntactic norms to accommodate the brevity and immediacy of Twitter discourse, resulting in hybrid forms that reflect contemporary digital communication. These changes are not merely superficial; they indicate evolving attitudes toward language, where efficiency and creativity are balanced with the need for clarity. The study explores how the demands of digital communication prompt users to reconfigure traditional grammatical structures, creating a dynamic interplay between standard language and emergent digital forms. By examining Twitter hashtag campaigns, the research sheds light on the processes by which social media trends catalyze morphological and syntactic shifts, contributing to a broader understanding of digital language evolution in Nigeria (Afolabi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the visible influence of Twitter hashtag campaigns on Nigerian language, there is limited research on their specific effects on morphosyntactic features. The rapid pace of digital communication has led to new grammatical innovations that remain underdocumented. This gap in understanding complicates the analysis of language change driven by social media trends. The study seeks to address this shortfall by focusing on how hashtag campaigns modify sentence structure and grammatical conventions in Nigerian digital discourse (Nnamdi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the impact of Twitter hashtag campaigns on morphosyntactic features in Nigerian digital discourse.

  • To analyze changes in grammatical structures prompted by social media trends.

  • To assess the broader implications of these linguistic innovations on language use.

Research Questions

  • How do Twitter hashtag campaigns influence morphosyntactic features in Nigeria?

  • What specific grammatical changes are observed in digital discourse due to social media trends?

  • How do these changes affect overall language use among Nigerian users?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of social media trends and language structure in Nigeria. By focusing on Twitter hashtag campaigns, the research provides insights into the mechanisms of digital language evolution, offering valuable information for linguists, educators, and digital media strategists. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding digital influences on morphosyntactic features (Okeke, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining the effect of Twitter hashtag campaigns on Nigerian morphosyntactic features. It does not cover other social media trends or broader linguistic phenomena.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntactic Features: The aspects of language that combine morphology and syntax to form sentence structures.

  • Hashtag Campaigns: Coordinated efforts on Twitter using specific hashtags to mobilize discussion and influence language.

  • Digital Discourse: Communication that occurs in online environments.
