Background of the Study
Digital media has increasingly become a site for the negotiation of linguistic identity, particularly in diverse societies such as Nigeria. Twitter hashtags serve as digital signifiers that encapsulate cultural, political, and social identities, thereby influencing the way Nigerians perceive and express their linguistic identities (Emeka, 2023). This study investigates how digital media, specifically through the use of hashtags on Twitter, plays a role in constructing and reinforcing linguistic identities among Nigerian users. Hashtags function as a unifying linguistic tool that aggregates voices from various socio-cultural backgrounds, promoting a shared sense of identity while simultaneously allowing for individual expression (Nneka, 2024). Through the analysis of hashtag campaigns, the study explores the dynamic interplay between digital language practices and the formation of a collective Nigerian identity. The digital discourse created by hashtag movements often challenges conventional language norms and fosters innovative linguistic practices. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in Nigeria, where multilingualism and cultural plurality are central to social life. By examining how Twitter hashtags contribute to linguistic identity formation, the study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the evolving relationship between digital media and language in contemporary Nigerian society (Chidinma, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing influence of digital media on linguistic identity, there is a dearth of empirical studies focusing on the role of Twitter hashtags in shaping Nigerian linguistic identity. The rapid evolution of hashtag usage complicates efforts to capture its long-term impact on language and identity formation. This gap hinders our ability to understand how digital tools contribute to the construction of a cohesive linguistic identity amidst Nigeria’s diverse cultural landscape. The study seeks to address this issue by exploring the mechanisms through which Twitter hashtags influence language practices and identity narratives, thereby offering insights for educators, policymakers, and digital media practitioners (Ijeoma, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the role of Twitter hashtags in shaping Nigerian linguistic identity.

  • To analyze the discourse generated by hashtag campaigns on Twitter.

  • To examine the impact of digital media on traditional language practices.

Research Questions

  • How do Twitter hashtags contribute to the formation of Nigerian linguistic identity?

  • What discourse patterns emerge from hashtag campaigns on Twitter?

  • How does digital media influence traditional language practices in Nigeria?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical exploration of how digital media, through Twitter hashtags, influences linguistic identity in Nigeria. The insights gained will help academics, policymakers, and media practitioners better understand the role of digital tools in language evolution and identity formation. It further emphasizes the cultural importance of social media in shaping public discourse (Obiageli, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing Twitter hashtags and their impact on Nigerian linguistic identity. It does not encompass other digital platforms or aspects of language use outside the realm of hashtags.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Media: Electronic platforms used for communication and dissemination of information.

  • Linguistic Identity: The sense of belonging to a particular language group or community.
