Background of the Study
Hashtag activism has become a powerful tool for mobilizing social and political movements globally, and Nigeria is no exception. On Twitter, hashtags serve not only as rallying points for collective action but also as catalysts for linguistic innovation, affecting morphosyntactic patterns in everyday communication (Obi, 2023). This study explores how hashtag activism influences the structure and form of language on Twitter, focusing on how morphosyntactic variations are produced and disseminated during social movements. The interactive and participatory nature of Twitter enables users to experiment with language, leading to the emergence of new linguistic forms that reflect both creativity and resistance (Nwachukwu, 2024). Hashtag campaigns encapsulate cultural sentiments and often challenge conventional grammatical norms. Despite the growing prevalence of hashtag activism, there is a limited understanding of its impact on language, particularly in terms of morphosyntactic changes. This research investigates the relationship between social media activism and language evolution in Nigeria, examining the ways in which digital discourse reshapes linguistic practices. The study also considers the role of user engagement in co-creating new linguistic identities and norms during online social movements (Ibrahim, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
While hashtag activism has significantly altered public discourse on Twitter, its specific impact on Nigerian morphosyntactic patterns remains insufficiently researched. The rapid evolution of digital language during activist movements raises questions about the stability and transformation of grammatical norms. This study addresses the lack of empirical evidence on how hashtag activism drives morphosyntactic innovation and alters language conventions on social media. The challenges lie in measuring the extent of linguistic change and understanding the factors that contribute to these transformations, making it difficult for scholars and practitioners to gauge the true impact of online activism on language (Uche, 2024). Consequently, this study seeks to explore the mechanisms by which digital activism influences language structure and to provide insights that can inform both linguistic theory and social media practices.

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the impact of hashtag activism on morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian Twitter discourse.

  • To analyze how digital activism drives linguistic innovation during social movements.

  • To explore user engagement and its role in the evolution of online language structures.

Research Questions

  • How does hashtag activism influence morphosyntactic patterns on Twitter in Nigeria?

  • What linguistic innovations emerge from online activist movements?

  • How does user engagement contribute to the transformation of language norms?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it elucidates the relationship between digital activism and language evolution, providing insights into how hashtag campaigns reshape morphosyntactic structures. The findings will inform academic research, social media policy development, and digital activism strategies. By highlighting linguistic innovations, the study contributes to understanding the broader cultural impact of online movements in Nigeria (Ajayi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing hashtag activism on Twitter and its effect on morphosyntactic patterns in Nigeria. It does not cover other social media platforms or non-morphosyntactic aspects of language.

Definitions of Terms

  • Hashtag Activism: The use of hashtags on social media to promote and mobilize social or political causes.

  • Morphosyntax: The branch of linguistics that studies the interaction between morphological and syntactic properties of language.

  • Twitter Movements: Social or political campaigns that primarily use Twitter as a platform for mobilization and discussion.
