Background of the study
WhatsApp and Twitter are instrumental in shaping contemporary linguistic practices in Nigeria, each catering to distinct communication contexts. WhatsApp, primarily used for private messaging, encourages informal and spontaneous language use characterized by abbreviations, emoticons, and codeswitching among diverse language groups. Conversely, Twitter’s public microblogging format demands brevity and creative expression, often resulting in the formation of concise expressions and trending neologisms (Okeke, 2023). Nigerian users navigate these platforms by adapting their language to suit different audiences and contexts, leading to dynamic linguistic practices that reflect both traditional and modern influences. This study examines how communication on WhatsApp and Twitter drives changes in vocabulary, syntax, and pragmatic markers. It explores the interplay between personal identity and public discourse, highlighting how digital communication influences everyday language and reinforces cultural identity. By comparing these platforms, the research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of digital media on Nigerian linguistic practices, contributing to the broader understanding of language evolution in the digital era (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Although WhatsApp and Twitter are widely used in Nigeria, few studies have systematically compared their impact on linguistic practices. Most research focuses on a single platform, thus neglecting the diverse language adaptations that occur in private versus public communication. This gap limits our understanding of how digital environments influence vocabulary, syntax, and pragmatic usage. The study aims to address this by comparing linguistic practices on WhatsApp and Twitter, thereby providing insights into how these platforms shape language use and cultural identity in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze linguistic practices on WhatsApp and Twitter in Nigeria.
  2. To compare vocabulary, syntax, and pragmatic markers across the platforms.
  3. To evaluate the impact of digital communication on cultural identity.

Research questions

  1. What linguistic differences exist between WhatsApp and Twitter?
  2. How do these platforms influence language use in private versus public contexts?
  3. What are the implications for cultural identity?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative analysis of how WhatsApp and Twitter influence Nigerian linguistic practices. The findings will enhance our understanding of digital language adaptation and inform sociolinguistic research, digital media strategies, and educational practices in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on textual analysis of WhatsApp and Twitter communications among Nigerian users and excludes other digital platforms and offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

  • Linguistic Practices: The ways in which language is used and adapted in communication.
  • WhatsApp Communication: Private, real-time messaging interactions.
  • Twitter Communication: Public microblogging and tweet exchanges.
