Background of the study
Viral social media trends, particularly those driven by hashtag movements on Twitter, have become catalysts for morphosyntactic innovation in Nigerian digital discourse. Hashtags originally served to categorize content; however, they now spur creative reconfigurations of language. Nigerian Twitter users adopt and adapt hashtags into concise phrases that often disrupt conventional word order, incorporate novel affixes, and generate hybrid syntactic constructions (Akinyele, 2023). These changes are propelled by the platform’s emphasis on brevity, where users are compelled to express complex ideas in limited characters. As hashtags spread virally, they influence both the morphology and syntax of everyday communication, leading to a dynamic digital lexicon that reflects shifting cultural and political landscapes. This study investigates how viral hashtag movements drive morphosyntactic change, analyzing various Twitter campaigns to document innovative word formations and syntactic patterns. It further explores the socio-cultural and technological factors that facilitate these linguistic transformations, thereby offering insights into the interplay between digital activism and language evolution in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although viral hashtags are recognized for their role in mobilizing social and political movements, their impact on morphosyntax remains underexplored. Existing literature often overlooks the detailed analysis of syntactic reconfigurations induced by hashtag movements on Twitter. This lack of comprehensive research restricts our understanding of how digital activism influences word formation and sentence structure in Nigerian online discourse. Consequently, there is a need to systematically investigate the morphosyntactic effects of viral hashtags to elucidate their role in shaping contemporary language practices (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insight into the transformative effect of viral hashtags on Nigerian morphosyntax. By analyzing Twitter hashtag movements, it contributes to our understanding of digital language evolution and the role of online activism in shaping grammatical innovation. The findings will inform both linguistic theory and practical applications in digital media communication (Akinyele, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to Twitter and focuses on hashtag-based morphosyntactic changes in Nigerian digital discourse. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language contexts.
