Background of the study
Twitter threads in Nigeria serve as a microcosm for morphosyntactic innovation, where users modify traditional grammar to suit the platform’s rapid, succinct communication style. In these threads, speakers employ abbreviated syntax, innovative punctuation, and hybrid language forms that blend Standard English with indigenous linguistic features (Okeke, 2023). These modifications arise from the constraints of character limits and the need for swift information exchange, resulting in novel morphosyntactic constructions. The study investigates how these innovations occur and spread, highlighting the role of digital communication in reshaping grammatical norms and fostering new linguistic conventions (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although morphosyntactic innovation is evident in Nigerian Twitter threads, there is limited systematic analysis of the processes driving these changes. Existing research often focuses on lexical innovation, neglecting the interplay between morphology and syntax in digital discourse. This gap hampers a full understanding of how digital constraints influence language structure. The study seeks to address this deficiency by providing a detailed examination of morphosyntactic innovations in Twitter threads (Chukwu, 2024).
