Background of the study
Facebook and Instagram are powerful platforms that have spurred significant linguistic change in Nigeria. Through these platforms, users engage in dynamic language practices that result in the emergence of neologisms, syntactic shifts, and semantic reconfigurations. On Facebook, extended posts and comments foster in-depth discussions that blend formal language with local dialects, while Instagram’s visually oriented content drives the creation of succinct, image-enhanced expressions (Okeke, 2023). Digital movements on these platforms—ranging from social activism to cultural trends—play a crucial role in redefining language norms. Nigerian users continuously innovate by integrating global influences with indigenous language practices, leading to a vibrant digital lexicon that mirrors social change. This study explores the mechanisms behind these linguistic transformations and examines the comparative influence of Facebook and Instagram on language evolution in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
While social media has been identified as a catalyst for linguistic change in Nigeria, comparative studies analyzing the specific contributions of platforms like Facebook and Instagram remain limited. Existing research tends to focus on isolated linguistic phenomena rather than a comprehensive analysis of digital language movements. This gap restricts our understanding of how different platforms shape linguistic change, necessitating a focused study that compares their unique impacts on language evolution (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare linguistic changes on Facebook and Instagram.
  2. To identify key neologisms and syntactic shifts arising from digital movements.
  3. To evaluate the influence of digital activism on language evolution.

Research questions

  1. How do Facebook and Instagram differ in driving linguistic change?
  2. What new linguistic forms emerge from digital movements?
  3. What role does digital activism play in shaping language in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative perspective on the impact of social media on language change, enhancing our understanding of digital linguistic evolution and informing communication strategies (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on Nigerian digital discourse on Facebook and Instagram and is limited to text-based analysis of language movements.

Definitions of terms

  • Linguistic Change: The process through which language evolves over time.
  • Digital Movement: A collective online effort that influences social and linguistic trends.
  • Neologism: A newly coined word or expression.
