Background of the study
Viral hashtags have not only galvanized social and political movements but also influenced the phonetic characteristics of digital communication in Nigeria. On TikTok, lipsync videos incorporate trending hashtags that prompt users to modify their pronunciation, intonation, and speech rhythm in innovative ways. Nigerian TikTok creators, often influenced by global trends, adapt these hashtags to create unique vocal styles that blend traditional accents with modern digital expressions (Adebayo, 2023). These phonetic variations emerge as users exaggerate or modify their speech to match the mood of the accompanying audio, resulting in distinctive patterns that deviate from standard pronunciation norms. The platform’s visual and auditory integration fosters a space where digital performance intersects with linguistic creativity. This study investigates how viral hashtags associated with TikTok lipsync trends drive phonetic variation, examining the interplay between digital media, cultural expression, and speech sound patterns (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
While TikTok lipsync trends have become immensely popular in Nigeria, there is limited research on their impact on phonetic variation. Existing literature tends to focus on the visual aspects of digital content, overlooking the auditory modifications that occur as part of viral hashtag phenomena. This gap in knowledge restricts our understanding of how digital media influences traditional phonetic patterns, calling for an in-depth investigation into the speech variations prompted by viral hashtags (Chukwu, 2024).
