Background of the study
Nigerian social media is characterized by extensive codeswitching, particularly on platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Users frequently alternate between languages to reflect their cultural identities, negotiate social contexts, and enhance interpersonal communication (Ibrahim, 2024). On Facebook, the blending of languages is often strategic and reflective of public identity, whereas WhatsApp conversations tend to be more informal and spontaneous. This study appraises the codeswitching practices prevalent in these platforms, examining how users merge indigenous languages with English and pidgin to create hybrid discourses. The practice not only facilitates effective communication in multilingual settings but also signals social belonging and cultural pride. By comparing codeswitching patterns across Facebook and WhatsApp, the research seeks to uncover the underlying factors that drive these linguistic choices and assess their implications for digital communication in Nigeria (Okeke, 2023). The study ultimately contributes to a broader understanding of multilingual dynamics in digital spaces and their role in shaping cultural expression.

Statement of the problem
Despite the common occurrence of codeswitching in Nigerian digital discourse, research that compares its practices across platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp is limited. Existing studies tend to analyze offline or isolated online contexts, leaving a gap in understanding the differences in codeswitching strategies in varied digital environments (Chukwu, 2024). This study addresses this gap by examining and comparing codeswitching practices in both platforms, thereby providing insights into their effects on digital communication and cultural identity (Afolabi, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To examine codeswitching patterns in Nigerian Facebook and WhatsApp communications.
  2. To compare the frequency and function of language alternation on both platforms.
  3. To evaluate the impact of these practices on digital cultural identity.

Research questions

  1. What are the predominant codeswitching patterns on Facebook and WhatsApp?
  2. How do the functions of codeswitching differ between these platforms?
  3. What implications do these practices have for cultural identity in digital discourse?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative appraisal of codeswitching in Nigerian digital discourse, offering insights that inform sociolinguistic theory and practical communication strategies in multilingual environments (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on codeswitching in Nigerian social media, specifically on Facebook and WhatsApp, and is limited to text-based analysis of online communication.

Definitions of terms

  • CodeSwitching: The practice of alternating between languages in communication.
  • Facebook Communication: Public and semi-public interactions on Facebook.
  • WhatsApp Communication: Private messaging exchanges on WhatsApp.
