Background of the study
Instagram captions in Nigeria have become a rich source of morphological innovation, with users inventing new word forms and altering traditional morphology to suit the platform’s visual and textual demands. Nigerian users frequently combine indigenous languages with English, leading to creative processes such as blending, clipping, and affixation. These innovations reflect cultural identity and the rapid pace of digital communication (Afolabi, 2023). This study compares morphological innovation in Instagram captions, analyzing how users manipulate language to express humor, identity, and social commentary. The integration of visual elements with text encourages brevity and inventiveness, prompting novel lexical constructions that challenge conventional norms. By examining a range of captions, the research uncovers patterns of word formation and the socio-cultural influences driving these changes (Ibrahim, 2024). The study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of digital morphological innovation, highlighting the dynamic interplay between technology, culture, and language in Nigeria.
Statement of the problem
Despite observable morphological innovation in Nigerian Instagram captions, there is limited systematic research examining these linguistic changes. Many studies focus on visual trends rather than the underlying word formation processes, leaving a gap in our understanding of how digital communication reshapes morphology (Chukwu, 2024). This research seeks to address this deficiency by comparing morphological practices across Instagram captions and evaluating their implications for broader language evolution, thereby filling a critical gap in digital linguistics (Okeke, 2023).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides valuable insights into digital morphological innovation in Nigerian social media. The findings will enhance our understanding of language change in digital contexts and inform educational and media practices (Afolabi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on Instagram captions in Nigerian digital discourse and is limited to textual analysis of morphological features.
