Background of the study
Digital morphosyntactic innovation in Nigeria is vividly illustrated by the creative language used in Instagram captions. Nigerian users often blend indigenous linguistic elements with English to form unique word structures and sentence constructions that reflect contemporary digital culture. Instagram captions, limited by character constraints yet rich in visual context, compel users to experiment with morphology and syntax. These captions frequently feature novel affixation, compounding, and syntactic reordering, which both challenge and enrich traditional language norms (Afolabi, 2023). The study examines how these innovations occur and spread across digital communities, considering the influence of visual stimuli and cultural references. By focusing on Instagram captions, the research aims to capture the dynamic interplay between visual art and language, revealing how digital media fosters creative communication. The study also explores the socio-cultural factors behind these innovations, such as identity expression and social mobility, thus providing a comprehensive view of morphosyntactic change in the digital era (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although digital morphosyntactic innovation is evident in Instagram captions, there is limited systematic research exploring its patterns and drivers in Nigerian digital communication. Existing studies tend to focus on lexical innovation rather than on the structural changes in word formation and syntax. This gap limits our understanding of how digital constraints and cultural influences lead to innovative morphosyntactic practices. The present study seeks to address this deficiency by analyzing the morphosyntactic features in Nigerian Instagram captions and evaluating their broader implications for language evolution (Chukwu, 2024).
