Background of the study
Codemixing, the blending of languages within a single communicative exchange, is a prominent feature of Nigerian social media, particularly in WhatsApp group chats. In these digital spaces, users seamlessly alternate between English, indigenous languages, and pidgin, creating a dynamic linguistic repertoire that reflects cultural diversity (Okoro, 2023). This study investigates the patterns and functions of codemixing, examining how speakers use language alternation to negotiate social identity, express solidarity, and convey nuanced meanings. WhatsApp group chats, characterized by their informal and spontaneous nature, provide an ideal environment for such linguistic creativity. The research explores the factors that drive codemixing, including audience, context, and digital literacy, and assesses its impact on communication efficiency and cultural expression (Ibrahim, 2024). By documenting these practices, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of multilingualism in Nigeria and highlights the transformative role of digital communication in shaping language use (Afolabi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the widespread occurrence of codemixing in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, systematic analysis of its patterns and functions is limited. Existing studies have predominantly focused on offline codemixing, leaving a gap in understanding its digital manifestations. This gap prevents a comprehensive view of how online environments influence multilingual practices. The study aims to address this deficiency by providing an in-depth analysis of codemixing in WhatsApp chats and its implications for digital communication (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze codemixing patterns in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats.
  2. To identify the social and contextual factors influencing codemixing.
  3. To evaluate the impact of codemixing on digital communication and identity.

Research questions

  1. What are the common patterns of codemixing in WhatsApp group chats?
  2. How do contextual factors influence language alternation?
  3. What role does codemixing play in shaping digital identity in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides valuable insights into codemixing practices in Nigerian digital communication. The findings will contribute to our understanding of multilingualism online and inform strategies for effective digital language use (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining codemixing in WhatsApp group chats within Nigerian digital discourse. It does not consider other platforms or offline communication.

Definitions of terms

  • CodeMixing: The practice of interweaving two or more languages in a single discourse.
  • WhatsApp Group Chat: A digital conversation within a WhatsApp group.
  • Multilingualism: The use or coexistence of multiple languages in communication.
